NWSOFA September Fiscal and Economic Issue Team Meeting

September 18, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Hi All,
9/15 update:
While we still plan to focus on federal budget issues Monday, the deadlines for appropriations and raising the debt ceiling have been extended to December.  This is good news as these issues won’t negatively affect the economy this fall.
For a good overview on these topics, see:
In other recent news, the U.S. set a new record for real median household incomes in 2016, exceeding the level set in 1999 at the height of the dot com bubble.
  • The middle class is making a comeback. The economic data, e.g. rising real median household incomes, have been showing this for years. Nice to see that perceptions are starting to catch up to reality.

     This doesn’t mean that some people are not being left behind. In some cities and towns there are no longer enough jobs, while elsewhere companies can’t find workers. Some job openings require skills that unemployed workers don’t have. Some potential workers are struggling with drug and alcohol issues. Others have criminal records. Older Americans have higher health care costs associated with their employment, making companies less likely to hire them.

    But overall the economy continues to recover. Continued job growth will help some of those currently left behind.

    As we enter Trump’s first fiscal year on October 1st, I hope the recovery continues for many more years.

Come join us at the September 18th meeting of the NWSOFA Fiscal and Economic Issues group at the Northwest Suburbs Dems office at 1310 West Northwest Highway. Get the facts about the economic recovery nationally and the status of ongoing appropriations challenges at both the state and national level. With the end of federal fiscal year on September 30th, we will be taking an extra look at
  • the need to raise the debt ceiling to avoid potential default;
  • the need to pass appropriations (or at least continuing resolutions) to fund the government after September 30th to avoid a partial government shutdown;
  • what is in the then current FY 2018 budget proposals, including additional funding because of Hurricane Harvey; and
  • OFA Day of Action on September 20th regarding federal budget issues.
The U.S. has added about 2.1 million jobs nationally in the last 12 months (through August 2017). In August the (U-3) unemployment rate was at 4.4%, while the U-6 rate was 8.6%. The U-6 rate is down from a high of 17.1% during the downturn and is close to the 8.4% rate in the fall of 2007 before the Great Recession of December 2007 to June 2009.
Illinois has a budget for fiscal year 2018, which began July 1st. School funding (a revised SB 1) was agreed to this past week. The jobs report for Illinois shows job gains for 2017 through July of 27,700. For the 12 months ending July 2017 Illinois reported job growth of 33,200
