What do these words mean – “liberal” and “Conservative”?
Where did they come from, what did them mean originally, and what do they mean now?
How have our political viewpoints evolved? Let’s find out what they originally meant, and how they have changed over time to become the extremely polarized politics of today
Conservatism emerged as a branch of liberalism in the eighteenth century, which addressed a philosophy of change. Conservatism argued that change ought to be scientific, through hypothesis testing, rather than through deductive logic, based on axiomatic ideas.
Liberalism is the idea which developed during the enlightenment that individuals are entitled to liberty, and that the best way to achieve that is through government by the people, where the people establish liberal institutions to guarantee their liberty.
