Supporters of Gun Violence Prevention and Friends,
Spotlight on: IL Cold Cases & Homicide Transparency Data
5 Amazing Guest Speakers
We are pleased to announce that the NWSOFA Gun Violence Prevention Team has an outstanding line-up of speakers for our April 18, 2024 Zoom meeting
They will be focusing on very important legislation in Illinois related to reopening unsolved homicide cases (Cold cases) and increased transparency in homicide data: Homicide Victims Families Rights Act (HB4743) and Homicide Data Transparency Bill (HB4754).
In addition to providing information about these bills, the speakers will let us know what we can do to help get them bills passed in the Illinois House and Senate. Each speaker will also share her story with us.
Our first speaker will be Alicia Schemel whose father was shot and killed in 1999 while driving to pick her up at work – a case that has never been solved. Alicia is a member of the Everytown Survivor Network and a volunteer with the Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action. She will also present data showing why the proposed legislation is needed.
Rhiannon Jimenez who has worked for gun violence prevention in the Chicago area for a number of years advocating for common-sense gun legislation at both the federal and state levels. She will explain the proposed legislation in more detail.
Marsha Lee, Millie Burgos, and Val Burgest, each of whom is a survivor who lost a child to gun violence.
Fact sheets from Moms Demand Action for the Homicide Victims Families Rights Act & Homicide Data Transparency Bill are attached. We hope that you will be able to join us for this powerful Zoom presentation.
A question and answer session will follow the presentation. More information, including how to register, Zoom link, and an informal agenda will follow soon! We hope that you can join us!
As always, thank you for all the you do,
Natalie and Cathy NWSOFA GVP Co-Leaders
