Discussion Group looking at the  US and Illinois Jobs, GDP & Debt

Want the Facts about the Economic Recovery?

Then Attend the Monthly Fiscal and Economic Issues Discussion Group Meeting and be amazed at what you discover.
We will have our standard update of the economy, both jobs and GDP. We will also continue our discussions of the economic recovery and policy issues that affect the recovery. The discussion will be based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics December report which was released this past Friday.

On Friday, the Labor Department reported that employers added another 252,000 workers to their payrolls in December, capping a year in which total employment rose by 2.95 million, the largest advance since 1999.

Typical Agenda based on the Decembers Economic, Jobs and Fiscal report:

Jobs Recovery – 2.95 million jobs added in last 12 months; more Americans working than before the recession.

353,000 jobs added in November revised up by 40,000 jobs

Unemployment rate: nationally at 5.6% in December down from 5.8% in November, the lowest rate since June 2008

GDP growth: Revised to 5.0 % in the 3rd quarter and 4.6% in 2nd quarter, up from minus 2.1% in 1st quarter. It appears that the negative 1st quarter result was just an anomaly, primarily due to the harsh winter in much of the country.

Budget Deficits – Historical and Projected: 2.8% of GDP in FY 2014, down from a high of 9.8%

Attend the January Discussion and be the most informed on your block or your discussion group!

A New Year Message
from the NWSOFA Climate Change Issue Lead
Joe Salvato
Our main message in Illinois will be creating jobs, growing the economy, and letting Illinois lead the Midwest into the clean energy future. We will likely engage with state legislators who will ultimately approve the state plan and be champions in demanding a strong Clean Power Plan for Illinois. This strategy may evolve as Gov. Rauner’s position becomes more clear.

During our national OFA Climate Change training in early December our Chicago area attendees from Chicago, the Northwest Suburbs, and Lake County decided to work as a team to meet this challenge.
We would like to partner with other climate change organizations, as well as with the NWSOFA Fiscal team. A strategy session will be scheduled in early 2015.
Joe states that he has been a climate change activist for over 2 years and find the following five videos to be insightful.
Total of 24 minutes
“Climate 101” with Bill Nye (4 minutes 33 seconds)

Chasing Ice – Largest Glacier Calving ever caught on camera (4 minutes 41 seconds)

Fact Check Time – 13 Claims followed by the facts – Written explanation and video (6 minutes 49 seconds)

Creating Doubt (5 minutes 11 seconds)

There is hope -EPA Clean Power Plan (3 minutes 15 seconds)

It’s time to Act .. It Is Time To Get Involved
Over the years the American Citizens have lost their voices, believing that we can not make a difference.  We have been beat down by the constant droning noise of the conservative right. This onslaught has made us like sheep .. afraid to express our views.  Not anymore!  OFA gives us back our voices and by working together we are making change one issue at a time. Together we can and will make a difference.
