Interfaith Vigil for Victims and Survivors of Gun Violence Sends Message of Encouragement and Hope
We see You. We support you. You are not alone.
Arlington Heights, IL – This was the message of the 9th National Vigil for All Victims and Survivors of Gun Violence presented by Chicago Survivors, Indivisible Illinois Social Justice Alliance, Moms Demand Action, Everytown Survivor Network and One Aim Illinois. This virtual vigil, attended by nearly 50 individuals, was held on Sunday, December 12, 2021, in partnership with the Newtown Action Alliance Foundation and its partners across the U.S. During this event, pre-recorded messages from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois State Senator Robert Peters provided survivors words of encouragement and hope. Survivor speakers included vigil Co-Hosts, Maria Pike and JaShawn Hill, Chicago Survivors, Valerie Burgest, Moms Demand Action and Mary Long, Founder of Sacred Ground Ministries. A pre-recorded and inspiring musical interlude of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” was provided by Rev. Padraig McGuire of Augustana Lutheran Church. The first interfaith speaker, Satnaam Singh Mago, Sikh Religious Society, Chicago, led those attending the virtual vigil in a Moment of Silence during the Ringing of the Bell in remembrance of the twenty children, six staff members killed at Sandy Hook on December 14, 2012, the more than 900,000 individuals killed or injured by gun violence since then and the nearly 800 individuals in Chicago who lost their life to gun violence in 2021. Rob Ore, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action Champaign-Urbana, Saadia Qureshi, Preemptive Love Coalition and Rev. Rob Schenck, President and Founder, The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute, all offered words of comfort to survivors and their families. The evening concluded with a call to action by Maria Pike and JaShawn Hill to #EndGunViolence. As Maria Pike stated, “Seeing eye to eye and serving our community is the best way to do it. Let’s honor with action. Let’s eliminate GUN VIOLENCE.”

The Illinois General Assembly must pass HB163-SFA2 now
Arlington Heights, Illinois — We at NWSOFA I ndivisible I llinois support the
Illinois Black Caucus and call on our legislators to pass HB 163-SFA2, the
Criminal Justice/Police Reform Bill during the current Lame Duck Session.
In the midst of ongoing police misconduct and the disproportionate
criminalization of Black, Brown, and I ndigenous people, NWSOFA stands in full support of this Bill which requires de-escalation training and body-worn cameras for officers to i ncrease discernment and accountability.
This Bill also addresses some much-needed reform i n our prison system,
including the elimination of cash bail.
In an effort to protect our communities and residents, we are calling for the

Terri Klowden, of Palatine, said that it wasn’t the first time advocating for women’s right to choose, but it was the first time she organized a counter-protest. She said she “felt very strongly” that she had to do something in response to an event like this happening in her community.

Election Security Strategic Team, an Indivisible Group “Rally to Fund Election Security”
Chicago IL – Rally to fund Election Security September 17th Activists nationwide will participate in a Day of Action to demand that all U.S. Senators adequately fund election security efforts in states and localities. We call on Illinois U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth to demand that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell – Secure Our Votes!
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed the SAFE Act, which allocated $600 million dollars to states and localities for election security funding. These funds would replace certain voting systems, carry out voting system security improvements and conduct Risk-Limiting Audits. Part of this proposal includes funding to switch counties over to verifiable paper ballots. Despite the passage of the SAFE Act in the house however, *the Senate has failed to act.*
The calls for greater election security come after the Mueller Report revealed extensive efforts on the part of foreign advisories to interfere with U.S. elections. During a press conference, Robert Mueller stated, “There were multiple, systematic efforts to interfere in our election. And that allegation deserves the attention of every American.” While no votes were changed in 2016, a recent report from the Senate Intelligence Committee concluded that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by Russia in the 2016 election. The Senate Appropriation Committee is currently working on their funding proposal, which is due on October 1st, so time is of the essence to secure our elections! Advocates are calling on the Senate to include $600 million in funding for election security efforts to secure our vote and protect our democracy.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve told you about places where gerrymandering is allowing extreme legislation to pass (Georgia); where voting rights are under attack (Iowa); and how the Trump administration is politicizing the 2020 Census in a way that threatens our democracy.
It’s true: There’s a lot of work to do.
In Nevada and Colorado, that’s exactly what has happened. Here’s good news:
In Nevada …
Newly-elected Governor Steve Sisolak signed an executive order to create
Nevada’s Complete Count Committee. No matter what happens with the
Trump administration’s unconstitutional “citizenship” question, Nevadans
are getting ready for the 2020 Census — the state is investing $5
million to promote it and educate citizens, especially reaching out to
hard-to-count populations.
It’s a huge step towards making sure Nevada’s districts are fair — and that Nevadans, including vulnerable immigrant communities, get the funding and political representation they deserve.
In Colorado …
Lawmakers are working to improve the state’s Automatic Voter
Registration (AVR), making it even easier for Coloradans to make their
voices heard on Election Day.
Colorado is one of 15 states in the country (plus Washington, D.C.) to offer AVR — and we need to make sure more are on the way. It keeps voter rolls more accurate, reduces errors on Election Day that make it harder to vote, and lowers costs for the state. It’s a no-brainer that is already paying dividends: In Oregon, the first state to implement AVR in 2016, registration rates have quadrupled at DMV offices.
This is the kind of progress we’re pushing for at All On The Line. We’re building a network of activists that will fight for policies like these in every state. We’re going to:
- Protect and expand voting rights
- Help deliver fair districts
- Do everything in our power to ensure a fair, accurate 2020 Census

Local Activists Join National Initiative Against Gerrymandering – Journal & Topics
Now that the votes are in for the April consolidated election, local progressive activists are working on a new issue that could affect future elections.
Northwest Suburban Organizing for Action, a local chapter of the national Organizing for Action group, recently joined the mission to end gerrymandering — a process by which legislators create districts to ensure one political party gets the majority of votes — throughout the country.
NWSOFA chapter co-leads Bill Davis and Sara Horan talked with the Journal & Topics last week about their group’s merger with former attorney general Eric Holder’s anti-gerrymandering National Democratic Redistricting Committee, as well as other key issues for the group in 2019.
They said the transition to focus on redistricting has been a three-month process, spurred by a conference call with Barack Obama.
“It’s a great initiative,” said Davis. He said the launch party for the new activist team, held March 24 at the Greater Palatine Area Democrats office in Arlington Heights, was a “packed house.”
Going forward, the “All on the Line” NWSOFA sub group will take on gerrymandering, joining eight other action groups that handle issues such as: gun violence, women’s rights, climate change, immigration reform, campaign finance, social outreach, healthcare and the economy.
According to Horan, the first step in the three-year plan to eradicating gerrymandering is to get involved in the 2020 census.
“We want to make sure all districts have a fair count,” she said. With this census data, new maps could be developed by independent commissions, Horan added. Thankfully, she said Illinois is less affected by gerrymandering than other states in the U.S.
Apart from gerrymandering, NWSOFA is also looking to work closer with political candidates in the future. While the group held off from endorsing candidates until last year, they are now committed to supporting those who “reflect the issue based values” of the organization, said Davis
Recently, NWSOFA supported the campaign of U.S. Rep. Sean Casten (D-6th) in an area that Horan said could be affected by gerrymandering. The group also supports State Sen. Ann Gillespie (D-27th) and State Rep. Mark Walker (D-53rd) of Arlington Heights.
“In 2020, as soon as the primaries are over, we will be taking a look at which candidates to support,” said Horan.
For NWSOFA members in 2019, another key goal is to support legislation aimed at reducing gun violence — one of the first issues the group tackled when they were first created half a decade ago. Davis said new issues also pop up every day for the organization’s issue teams to work on.
“This is a fun time,” he said. “We are working with people who truly believe they can change things.”

Elgin-area unions, Dems picket appearance by man who won Janus vs. AFSCME union dues case for GOP
For the Elgin Township Republican Central Committee, having Mark Janus speak at its annual fundraising dinner Thursday night was about championing free speech.
For the union representatives and Elgin Township Democrats protesting outside that dinner, the dinner was a celebration of the GOP’s “most cynical and destructive attack yet on the middle class,” a release from the Democratic Leaders of Illinois said.
Janus, 65, of Springfield, was the lead plaintiff in Janus vs. AFSCME, the U.S. Supreme Court case in which justices ruled, in a 5-4 vote, that government workers should not be forced to pay dues to a union they did not wish to join and whose political positions they did not support.
Janus, a child support specialist at the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, became the case’s plaintiff after the original lawsuit filed by Gov. Bruce Rauner was dismissed for lack of standing.
Janus’ visit to Elgin prompted union members from around the area as well as elected officials and candidates running for office to set up a picket line on Route 31 in front of the Elgin Holiday Inn, where the dinner was being held. Protesters carrying signs stood alongside huge inflated rats and a fat cat.
“We are here to greet Mark Janus, to let him know we are paying attention — that all labor is paying attention,” said Joe Galli, an Elgin firefighter and president of Local 439, the firefighter’s union.
State Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, said the Janus decision, along with Rauner and Donald Trump, have weakened the middle class.
They also criticized Janus’ for changing jobs after the court ruling, leaving his state position to become a senior fellow at the Liberty Justice Center, which represented him in court.
For Elgin Republicans, however, Janus is a hero, helping to overturn a Supreme Court decision that had stood for 40 years.
Julie Schmidt, a precinct committeeman, said Janus “stood up for free speech and freedom of association. We do not look at it as anti-union, but pro-free speech.”
The ruling means “a non-union member does not have to pay a fee” to a group with whom the employee does not share a philosophy, Schmidt said.
Janus “has a very interesting story,” said Jason Dusenberry, an Elgin resident and chairman of the Elgin Township Republican Central Committee.

Weatherman Skilling draws crowd at Palatine Sustainable Energy Expo
To celebrate the installation of solar panels on the roof of Countryside Church in Palatine, parishioners initially envisioned “a party with cake.”
What the event ultimately became was a daylong Sustainable Energy Expo drawing more than 300 people, with keynote addresses from WGN Meteorologist Tom Skilling, Argonne National Laboratory scientist and author Seth Darling and Des Plaines Democratic state Sen. Laura Murphy.
But no cake.
“We decided we wanted to share with the community and other congregations what we had learned,” said Mark Krivchenia, one of the parishioners who helped spearhead the campaign to outfit the church with solar panels. “In the end, it comes down to our belief that it’s an ethical and moral issue to care for our common home.”
The solar panels on the roof will cut the church’s reliance on traditional energy sources by 40 percent. They have a guaranteed life span of 30 years and are expected to pay for themselves after eight to 10 years, Krivchenia said.
About a dozen exhibitors were invited to participate in the expo and share information on topics such as native plantings, recycling, renewable energy, electric cars and other conservation issues.
Linda Sullivan, a member of the Illinois chapter of the Sierra Club’s executive committee, said interest in her group has grown significantly since President Donald Trump’s election in November 2016, followed by his controversial appointments of Scott Pruitt to lead the Environmental Protection Agency and Ryan Zinke to serve as secretary of the interior.
“People have realized that they have to get involved and just being in favor of something and wanting something to get done is not enough,” she said. “Trump has started a movement, even though it wasn’t his intention.”
For his part, Skilling lauded efforts by scientists and environmental groups that have been promoting ways to fight global warming by focusing on ways to reduce mankind’s carbon footprint, the way the church has done.
Skilling talked about the broader economic and cultural ramifications of global warming, pointing out the loss of tourism jobs caused by the destruction or depletion of natural resources as well as human migration and military conflict caused by droughts brought on by climate change.
“The tentacles of climate change don’t just affect our atmosphere,” he warned. “People will say that climate change isn’t real, and it’s nonsense. The trend is real. Every serious scientific organization in the world agrees that climate change is happening.”

“This is the angry Sue,” Sue Friedman, co-lead of the Northwest Suburban Chicago Organizing for Action “Stand With Women” group, said to those gathered Saturday in her Des Plaines kitchen.
She was holding a sign that read “Quit Hanging Us Up,” below a sarcastic depiction of a clothesline. Surrounding her were Northwest suburban mothers, daughters, professionals and longtime activists making similar signs in preparation to represent the area during Saturday’s (Jan. 20) “March to the Polls” women’s march in Chicago.
“It’s time to let our nasty woman side out,” said “Stand With Women” co-lead Florence Palumbo Zilka.
Some of the women joined the 250,000 protesters who attended the march last year, held the day after President Donald Trump was sworn into office. Even more are expected this year,
according to Friedman.
Though NWSOFA does not take an official stance on Trump himself, the organization does have opposing views to the president on a number of issues, including gun control, the right to choose, climate change and the Affordable Care Act, said local NWSOFA leader Sue Horan, one of the sign-makers.
“We go on issues,” she said. “We march to the polls, we’ve got to get everyone to vote.”
Many in attendance, including Laura Walker and Terri Klouden of Palatine, found activism through their frustration with Trump administration policies.
“Since the election, a lot of people started getting more involved,” Walker said.
Des Plaines veterinarian Patty Cahill said “Scott Pruitt as the head of the EPA is an abomination,” citing how the Trump administration worked against a multi-state effort to improve the ecology of the Great Lakes.
Horan, Carolyn Roberts of the League of Women Voters and local high school teacher Susan Ranft came to the group after decades of feminist activism.
“I’ve been involved as long as I can remember,” Ranft told the Journal & Topics. “I tried to get the ERA passed in the ‘70s.”
She was referring to the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution proposed by feminists in Seneca Falls, NY, in 1923. If passed, the amendment would remove legal distinctions between men and women included in the document. ERA was almost ratified in the late 1970s, just a few states shy of becoming reality. Passing it is one of the goals for national Organizing for Action members.
David Horwitz, another longtime activist and the only man in attendance at Friedman’s poster-making meeting, said he aims to shed light on women who have pursued seats of power only to be ignored or passed over, from Shirley Chisholm, who became major-party black candidate for president in 1972, to Hillary Clinton in 2017.
Both Ranft and Horan said while they saw feminist activism recede after the 1970s, the past two years have shown a different trend.
“It’s been pretty lackluster for a long time. I see it growing again, and that’s one good thing to come out of this political climate,” said Ranft.
Numbers show that interest in women’s issues is, indeed, growing, said Roberts, who has been with the League of Women Voters for 40 years. Over the past year, membership in the Palatine chapter has doubled, she said.
“There are new people, but not necessarily young people,” she said.
A call for young women to join activist causes was echoed by Horan, who remembers marching against the Vietnam War as a college student.
“This whole resurgence, the energy and the people, it’s just kept my sanity,” she said. “The thing is, we need more young people.”
Gayle Lewis, a Buffalo Grove psychotherapist who became involved in “Stand With Women” through her support of the Affordable Care Act and increased access to mental health care for women, said her daughter used to attend meetings with her. However, she stopped coming once she entered high school.
All of the activists gathered at Friedman’s were past college age, many with children of their own and some retired like Friedman.
After a lifetime being held down by the men in her life, including a father who threatened to disown her for attending college, Friedman finally found a place for herself in the activist movement after her children moved out and she ended a 32-year career in nursing. She joined NWSOFA as a fellow in 2015.
“I’m retired, so now I can do what I love,” she said.
Though she did not attend public marches in her youth, Friedman remembers protesting her own family on the front lawn of their home. In her new role, she said she now sees her life through a new lens and jumps into her “women’s role” of trying to nurture and take care of everyone less often.
“Now, before I put a word out, I ask myself if it is helping women,” she said. “I am learning a different way to live.”

Palatine, IL – According to the Newtown Foundation, since the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012, over 500,000 Americans have been killed or injured by guns. And of the 150,000 killed since Sandy Hook, two-thirds of these deaths have been suicides.
To honor these lives and to stand with the tens of thousands of surviving family members of all victims of gun violence, including the twenty children and six educators killed in the Sandy Hook tragedy, members of the Sikh Religious Society, Palatine, Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) and residents of surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago gathered on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, for an interfaith, candlelight vigil at the Sikh Gurdwara in Palatine, IL.
Invited guests in attendance were recognized by Sikh Religious Society member, Laddi Singh. These guests included Illinois State Senator, Tom Rooney, Democratic Committeeman, Matt Flamm and candidate for Democratic Committeeman, Patrick Watson.
Those who attended the vigil heard messages of justice, hope, courage and unity from the following interfaith speakers, who were all introduced by Rajinder Singh Mago, a member of the Sikh Religious Society: Prof. Kulwant Singh Hundal and Mrs. Surinder Kaur Singh, Sikh Religious Society, Palatine, Palatine, IL, Rabbi Stephen Hart, Temple Chai, Long Grove, IL, and Pastor Melissa Earley, First United Methodist Church of Arlington Hts, Arlington Hts, IL. Also invited to speak, but unable to attend, was Mr. G. Abdullah Mitchell, Executive Director, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago.
In addition, Ms. Gurleen Kaur Singh, a member of the Sikh Religious Society, spoke about the efforts of the United Sikh Volunteers and Khalsa Aid to come to the help of those in need around the world. These positive acts of kindness of the Sikh community have helped to overcome the negative impact of gun violence on all communities, including Oak Creek, Wisconsin, which is located just south of Milwaukee. Oak Creek is the community that experienced the shooting deaths of six people and wounding of three other people on August 5, 2012, at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
Following the remarks by Ms. Singh, a Pledge of Action and Support was shared with everyone in attendance by NWSOFA Representative, Patrick Watson.
The pledge shared by Watson focused on the need to #HonorWithAction all those who have been lost and included the promise to “call upon our local, state and national leaders to promote policies and legislation that will reduce the impact of gun violence on all our communities” and also a promise to “inform everyone, including our faith communities, of the ongoing struggle to understand the moral, ethical and spiritual imperative of ending gun violence.”
As a Voice of the Survivors, Maria Pike, Everytown Fellow and Survivor Engagement Lead, IL, had a chance to speak from her heart about her son, Ricky Pike, who was killed on August 3rd, 2012. Since his death, Maria has been working tirelessly to bring a sense of healing, peace, hope and restorative justice to gun violence survivors in Chicago and in the suburbs.
Bringing this sense of peace and healing to a community was also the job of Mrs. Surinder Kaur Singh, a social worker, who was there to comfort the survivors of those killed and wounded in the tragic shooting in 2012 at the Sikh Temple, Wisconsin, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. She shared these experiences, as a member of the on-the-scene emotional support team, with those who attended the interfaith vigil.
After Maria Pike and Mrs. Surinder Kaur Singh completed their remarks, there was a reading of the names of the victims of Sandy Hook, a somber lighting of candles and a moment of emotion-filled silence in remembrance of the Sandy Hook victims and their survivors.
At the conclusion of the vigil, everyone was invited to stay for reflection and conversation while enjoying a langar, a simple vegetarian meal, and also invited to join a tour of the Sikh Gurdwara where a sense of genuine welcome, warm hospitality and unity were in abundance for all who attended the 2017 National Vigil to #EndGunViolence.

In remembrance of the 20 elementary schoolchildren and six teachers killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Dec. 14, 2012, in Newtown Connecticut, the Sikh Religious Society, Palatine, in partnership with the community organization North West Suburbs Organizing For Action organized an interfaith prayer service and candlelight vigil.
The service was a part of nationwide vigils and events to #EndGunViolence. This was the fifth anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting and 150,000 people have been killed by gun violence since this tragedy.
About 100 members of various faith groups and local leaders surrounded by people of goodwill gathered at the Sikh Gurdwara to pray and honor the victims of this tragedy.
The vigil started indoors with Kirtan (singing of Sikh hymns) in the langar hall of the Palatine Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship). The hymns translated in English meant, “O’ Lord of this universe, please nourish and take care of all the people of your creation with your blessings and mercy.”
Eight speakers, representing the Sikh, Muslim, Bahai, Christian, Jewish, gun violence prevention communities, and civil action oriented organizations addressed the gathering. The speakers shared their personal stories, faith perspectives of hope and peace, and emphasized solidarity and strength in opposing gun violence where innocent lives are lost. They reminded the audience that gun violence impacts every community and all religions, races and ages.
Surinder Kaur Singh of the Sikh Religious Society opened the program and welcomed the guests. Laddi Singh recognized elected officials including Illinois Senator Tom Rooney, and participating nonprofit organizations.
“We must create an America free from senseless gun violence where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, at their places of worship, on the street and in the shopping malls,” said Rajinder Singh Mago, the co-coordinator of the event who introduced the interfaith speakers.

Patrick Watson read a pledge and call to action to educate legislators to work on stricter gun laws to end senseless gun violence.
Reading of the 26 victims names by Kimberley Garnett and Prempal Singh preceded lighting of candles and a moment of silence to honor the victims.
Matt Flamm of Palatine Township representing NWSOFA, thanked all the guests, participants and the organizers.
All the participants of the event were invited to partake “langar” the community kitchen vegetarian meal.

Shout Out: Keith Moens, an active participant at Arlington Heights Village Board meetings
No matter what issue is being discussed by Arlington Heights Village Board members at their bi-monthly meetings, resident Keith Moens likely will step up to the podium to share his views.
Moens, 65, a retired middle school math and science teacher, often is one of the few residents to show up regularly at Arlington Heights Village Hall and engage officials during board meetings.
Pioneer Press recently caught up with Moens, who explained why he took on the important role of community activist, even though he said village officials mostly are doing a decent job.
Q: I can’t remember covering an Arlington Heights Village Board meeting that you have not attended. Why is it so important to you to go to all of the meetings?
A: I want to get across the point that democracy is under attack at the local level. And I mean democracy with a little “d.” Everyone needs to have the chance to get involved and participate, which is why I’m pushing for the inclusion of a “citizens to be heard” item on the agenda of the committee of the whole meetings – not just the village board meetings.
Q: Why do you think it’s important for officials to include a “citizens to be heard” item at the committee meetings?
A: Because the committee of the whole meetings, and also the other commission meetings, are the first step in the democratic process, and include all of the discussion before it goes before the village board for a final vote. For example, there was a recent public hearing for the 2018 budget, but it was held right before the village board voted, which is way too late for any resident to provide any meaningful input. And nothing anyone says in a three-minute timeframe is going to change the way they vote at that point.
Q: Have you considered running for trustee in the future?
A: I ran for trustee back in (2007) and I didn’t win, but it was a very good experience. I learned a lot, and it was a lot of fun. We need more people to participate in local democracy, as the voter turnout for these elections is absolutely pathetic. At this point, no, I don’t think I’d run again because I think the village needs young blood, and to have a younger group of people involved in the decision-making. I’m not a fan of term limits, but I think we’d have more voter turnout if we had younger candidates with differing opinions.
Q: Were you interested in politics when you were growing up?
A: I was raised on a grain and livestock farm in central Illinois, and my dad was a teacher. As a family, we always discussed politics. It was the late 1960s and early 1970s, and everyone was very involved at the local level.
Q: Did you have any heroes growing up?
A: Yes, it all goes back to (President) John F. Kennedy, who inspired me so much. And Martin Luther King Jr., too, who stood up for what needed to be said and who was a great leader.
Q: I’ve noticed that you ride your bike to the village board meetings all year long. Are you still riding your bike this week, even though it’s below zero?
A: (He laughs) Yes, this weather makes things a little restrictive, but as long as the streets are clean, I’ll still ride my bike.

Northwest Suburbs Organizing For Action (NWSOFA) Held a Panel Discussion on Healthcare Reform in Roselle, IL
Roselle, IL – On Wednesday, April 26th more than 40 attended a speaker’s forum about the Myths and Facts of the ACA and global healthcare options at the Roselle United Methodist Church. The meeting was organized by Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA), a nonpartisan volunteer organization dedicated to advancing progressive policies. There were 3 speakers, Graciela Guzman, Enrollment Coordinator at Patient Innovation Center in Chicago. Graciela presented ACA at glance where we heard an overview of the current ACA law. Graciela also help shed light on some of the more prevalent myths.
MYTH: The ACA makes it hard for Middle Americans to purchase insurance in the individual Marketplace.
FACT: Almost 83% or 10.5 million of the 12.7million people insured through the ACA Marketplace received premium subsidies from 11/15-2/16. The rise in premiums in recent years in congruent with the rising healthcare costs nationwide. Premiums are rising at a much slower rate than they were prior to the ACA-one of the slowest rates in the last 50 years.
MYTH: Repeal and reforms to the ACA will only impact individuals covered via the Exchange
FACT: Many individuals will be affected by changes within the ACA across Medicaid and private coverage. Illinois stands to lose $50 billion in federal funding for Medicaid, CHIP and financial assistance for marketplace coverage. Changes to consumer protections could impact other coverage types. 5.9 million Illinoisans with private healthcare coverage (including 1.2 million children) and 2.1 million seniors on Medicare will lose guaranteed access to free preventative care.
Mary Beth Lang discussed her healthcare experiences in Norway. Mary Ann lived in Norway fro over 4 years and gave birth to her daughter while in Norway. Mary Beth found her experiences to be extremely positive. Mary Beth had a Primary Care doctor and saw that doctor every time she went to the doctor and only paid $17 copay.
Mike Cavill was born in Australia and returns from time to time to visit family. In Australia they have 2 systems. Everyone is covered by Medicare, which levies a 2% tax. The levy is reduced or free for low-income families. In addition to the Medicare individuals are given incentives to buy Private Health Insurance. Regardless of the plan everyone has health Insurance. The cost to see your Primary Care doctor is $20 copay. There is out of pocket cost for major surgery, which is a fraction of the cost we pay for out of pocket.
MYTH Seeing a specialist is a long wait to get appointment.

A coalition of Illinois 6th Congressional District volunteers demand that Representative Roskam vote against the GOP healthcare plan and hold a town hall meeting.Barrington, IL – On Tuesday, March 21th 2017 at 5:30pm, a coalition of grassroots volunteer activists: NWSOFA, and more will hold a rally outside Representative Peter Roskam Barrington Office. Residents of the Illinois 6th Congressional District are asking that Representative Roskam vote against the upcoming GOP healthcare plan that would leave millions of America’s without health coverage. Constituents are also upset that Roskam has repeatedly refused to meet with constituents to discuss critical issues. The protest on Tuesday will be one in a string of large protest against Roskam. The first took place in Palatine, Illinois outside of the Palatine Republican Township Organization. Roskam refused an offer from the League of Women Voters to take part in a controlled town hall meeting, but had time to meet with the Republican township organization. The second protest was outside a Republican River Forest/ Oak Park township organization meeting where Representative Roskam was the keynote speaker; over 60 demonstrated outside of the event on less than 24 hours’ notice. The third took place outside of Representative Roskam’s Barrington office during the congressional recess; well over 100 residents gathered outside of the office. Representative Roskam and his staff were not present at the office, but constituents signed a ledger to let Representative Roskam and his staffs aware that they were there. The fourth took place in Chicago outside of a meeting with the City Club where Roskam spoke at a closed event. Over 70 constituents gathered to ask Roskam for a town hall. On Monday, March 21st protesters will gather at 5:30pm in Barrington, IL.Tuesday’s event will mark the coalitions’ continued steps toward holding Peter Roskam accountable to his constituents. Representative Roskam has voted on a number of positions and made statements not supported by constituents of the district. Paper leaves voice of the right wing unchecked
I saw your editorial about fake news, and the irony dripped from it so strongly it pulled the characters out of shape.
It hits me in two ways. During the recent campaign the Daily Herald breathlessly printed every story about every rumor regarding Secretary Clinton that it could find, front page or overleaf. However, most stories about Trump’s aberrations, course reversals, insults and rants indenting violence ended up on Page 9, buried under a softball headline. That was fake news. Own it.
And on the same page as that editorial, only inches away, was a letter, uncommented, pushing the totally discredited Laffer curve idea (government income rising after a tax decrease) — ask Kansas about that.
Any reader who wants to keep up with the latest nut-job conspiracy theories need look no further than the Daily Herald letters to the editor section.
It’s all there: climate change denial; incorrect statistics on black violence; lies about LGBT issues; incorrect assertions about immigrant crime — not to mention incorrect assertions regarding crime trends, unemployment rates, the national debt, voter fraud rates (while ignoring voter suppression and gerrymandering impacts).
It’s all there for your reading pleasure with no disclaimers. And the more factually incorrect the claims, the more space they seem to get.
It’s time you start practicing what your editorial admonishes others to do.

OFA to Highlight Human Cost of Obamacare Repeal in Illinois
Grassroots Event Is Part of National Day of Action Being Held by OFA Volunteers and Partner Organizations
SCHAUMBURG, IL – With some in Congress scrambling to repeal Obamacare as part of a reckless political crusade, OFA volunteers are holding an event in Illinois on Sunday, January 15 to amplify the voices of Illinoisans whose lives and livelihoods hang in the balance. This is part of a national day of action to emphasize the devastating human cost of repeal. In Illinois alone, repeal would cause 1.2 million people to lose their health insurance and cost the state $49.9 billion in federal health funding.

Washington DC – Abrar Quader, attorney and Director of Government and Community Partnerships for the public health non-profit Compassionate Care Network, and a Board Member of the civic engagement organization Community Builders Council, is one of the American Muslim leaders from across the United States who have been invited to an official White House reception dinner for national American Muslim leaders. The dinner, which is scheduled to be on July 21 and is part of an annual White House tradition commemorating Ramadan, will be an opportunity for President Obama to host American Muslim leaders from across the United States for the traditional Eid holiday, commemorating the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
In announcing the reception, President Obama’s statement that “…we are one American family,” underscored the importance of recognizing the contributions of American Muslims to American society, particularly during these polarized times. “I stand firmly with Muslim American communities in rejection of the voices that seek to divide us or limit our religious freedoms or civil rights,” said Obama. “I stand committed to safeguarding the civil rights of all Americans no matter their religion or appearance. I stand in celebration of our common humanity and dedication to peace and justice for all.”
Abrar Quader has been invited several times in recent years to participate in White House meetings on health equity policy, the Affordable Care Act and the contributions of American Muslims to providing healthcare access in underserved communities across the United States. This is his first time participating in the annual Ramadan dinner with the President and other national Muslim leaders.
“A meeting like this is important especially now because it serves to lift up the countless contributions of American Muslims who have always been an integral part of the fabric of this great nation,” said Quader upon receiving the White House invitation. “An invitation from the President is of course an great honor for me personally, but really I am accepting the invitation on behalf of all of the community members who are unsung heroes with whom I work on issues like civic engagement, violence prevention, immigration, public health, the environment and so many other issues affecting all our communities. “This Ramadan we celebrated the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali, who showed the world that there is no contradiction between the values of America and the principles of Islam,” said Quader. “At the same time, from Orlando to Medina, we saw a rise in violence committed by people who have hijacked the name of Islam. As a result of inflammatory political rhetoric, anti-Muslim violence has also been on the rise in the United States, with attacks on mosques and men and women being targeted for wearing Islamic attire. Do you know someone who has lost a loved one to gun violence? What would you do if you lost a loved one to gun violence? Ask your elected officials and they say, “I’m praying for the victims …”
We need real action now!
You may think that this could never happen to you, or at least you hope it won’t. The residents of Orlando, Chicago, Charleston, Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, San Bernardino,
Colorado Springs, Roseburg, Santa Monica, and Oak Creek never thought it would happen in their cities or towns. Tragically, it did.
Why? Why in a country that vows “liberty and justice for all” are citizens gunned down with regularity?
The reason is that there are too many guns available to people who should not have a gun in their possession.
I go to my local hair salon. The stylists need a license, which generates revenue. I want to drive a car. I need a license, which generates revenue. I go to purchase alcohol. The seller needs a license, which generates revenue. I want to go fishing. I need a license, which generates revenue.
I go to buy a gun. The seller does not need a license in Illinois. No revenue! Did you know that Arlington Heights has seven gun dealers?
Did you know that over 90 percent of voters in suburban Cook County support the licensing of gun dealers in Illinois?
Did you know that 77 percent of Illinois gun owners support the licensing of gun dealers in Illinois?

GABBY GIFFORDS COMES TO ILLINOIS TO PROMOTE GUN DEALER LEGISLATION
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords joined Illinois leaders Thursday to launch the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition to urge the state’s leaders to curb the flow of illegal guns into the state.
The Gun Dealer Licensing Act would give authorities the tools to encourage better business practices among federally licensed gun dealers and hold corrupt dealers accountable.
From 2009 to 2013, 40 percent of the guns used in crimes in Chicago came from gun dealers within Illinois. But the group says legal loopholes and a lack of enforcement resources allow illegal guns to be more readily available.
“Stopping gun violence takes courage – the courage to do what’s right, and the courage of new ideas. I’ve seen great courage when my life was on the line,” said Congresswoman Giffords. “Now is the time to come together – to be responsible! Democrats, Republicans – everyone.”
“This effort is long overdue in Illinois. We’ve been working on these issues for years, and the key thing I’ve learned is this: somewhere in the stream of commerce between a gun manufacturer and a crime scene there is someone purporting to be a law-abiding gun owner, buyer or seller who is anything but,” said Illinois Senate President Pro Tempore Don Harmon (D-Oak Park).
The new legislation would require criminal background checks for gun dealer employees, training and education for gun dealers employees so the background check system can work better, and law enforcement would have the ability to inspect the inventories of licensed gun dealers.
Between 2002-2014, 14,273 people were killed with guns in Illinois, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
Despite the lasting effect of her gunshot wounds on her ability speak, Giffords remains one of the nation’s most eloquent advocates for gun control.
In 2011, the Arizona Democrat was among 18 people shot, including six fatally, as she met with constituents outside a supermarket near Tucson. After the incident came calls for Congress to restrict access to firearms and high-capacity magazines, and gun control advocates have turned their efforts to changing laws state by state.
Among those attending Thursday’s news conference was Country Club Hills Police Chief William Jones. His son, Park Forest Patrolman Tim Jones, is recovering after he suffered a brain injury when shot on duty in March.
“Tim’s making small progress daily, and we’re going to continue praying and thanking God for the miracle we received,” William Jones siad.
Illinois State Rifle Association President Richard Pearson says he’s aware of the Gun Dealers Licensing Act. He writes on the organization’s website that members should be on “high alert” and to contact their state lawmakers to oppose the measure.

Mothers of gun violence victims, including a young woman killed at a mass shooting at Northern Illinois University, speak out at a church vigil in Palatine.
Laddi Singh said she had never stepped inside a church until this week.
But Singh felt she had to act when, following the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., she heard friends at her Sikh temple talking about whether they should hire extra security to protect themselves.
So late Wednesday, she sat in a church pew for the first time, holding aloft a candle in solidarity with about 50 others in a Palatine house of worship — a gesture signaling she would commit to help end gun violence.
There were about a dozen events in Illinois and hundreds nationwide in conjunction with the National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., and organized by the Newtown Foundation. There are vigils nationwide through Dec. 14, the third anniversary of the mass shooting that killed 26 children and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
As the mothers spoke, a screen above them flashed the faces, many now familiar, of those who’ve lost their lives to gun violence: the teens and teacher massacred at Columbine High School, the first-graders shot at Sandy Hook, the 14 people killed last week in San Bernardino, the 12 who died in a Colorado movie theater, the five students slain at NIU, the nine gunned down at Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina, the six killed at a Wisconsin Sikh temple, and individual deaths — Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd, Laquan McDonald and Tyshawn Lee.
“You’re seeing all these young kids dying because we don’t have any control over guns,” said Singh, 42, of Palatine. “We have to do something.”
She said she’s close with the families of those slain in 2012 at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., and fears that her husband and son, who are Sikh and wear turbans, will be targets for harassment.
At the vigil in Palatine, two miles north of the former site of Brown’s Chicken & Pasta, where six people were shot and one stabbed to death in 1993, the Rev. Larry Bullock called on churches to not stand silent about gun violence. He’s the founder and senior pastor of Living Faith Cathedral Worship Center Church, which also has worship services at the Palatine vigil site.
“Silence is not an option for us. We must speak out,” he said. “… If the church doesn’t stand for something, then what good are we? What are we worth? What’s it all about? The churches must take the moral leadership.”
Myra Onesimus, an elder at Living Faith, which organized the Palatine vigil with Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action, said the regularity of gun violence should prompt people to action.
“I think with the culmination of the events of this year … it simply has gotten to a point where we’re all feeling overwhelmed,” she said. “Even if it doesn’t touch our families personally, if you have a heart, and you see it on the news, it touches you.”
Alice Thomas-Norris, whose daughter, Rolanda LaKesia Marshall, died at 14 when she was struck by a bullet in a drive-by shooting at a Beefee restaurant in Chicago, recalled seeing bullet casings scattered across the floor of the crime scene. Her voice wavered with emotion as she spoke about the void left by the slaying of her child.
All three mothers spoke of how losing their children to gun violence drew them into activism. Mary Kay Mace, whose daughter, Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville, was killed in the NIU shootings, has been advocating for “stronger, smarter gun laws.”
Mary Long, whose son Eric Williams died at 25 in a South Side shooting, started Sacred Ground Ministries to connect urban and suburban communities to provide mentorship to youths in schools near the crime scene. Thomas-Norris has spent the past two decades, in part through an organization called Purpose Over Pain, reaching out to other parents whose children have been killed by gun violence.
“I wanted to know, ‘How could I live again?’ … Because I didn’t want to live,” Thomas-Norris, of Oak Park, said of the months after her daughter’s slaying, which remains unsolved. “I thought of ways I could kill myself, and God kept telling me, ‘No, you can’t do that.’ … He gave me this ministry to reach out to other parents because I wanted to reach out to other parents and tell them that they could live.”

Climate Change – International Action Needs to Be Taken Now
Leaders of 150 nations, along with 40,000 delegates from 195 countries have the unique opportunity to conclude a new post-Kyoto international climate change treaty at the UN climate change COP21 meeting in Paris, with such an agreement to be implemented by 2020. The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty, which extended the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Kyoto Protocol treaty was negotiated in December 1997 at the city of Kyoto, Japan and came into force February 16th, 2005. Its intent was to be effective from 2008-2012.
This is of critical importance as our planet continues to heat up causing extreme climate change. Per the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), 15 of the last 18 years are the hottest in recorded history going back to 1880. 2014 was our hottest year on record, and 2015 will be even hotter.
CO2 is the major greenhouse (warming) gas. With the industrial revolution came the progressive annual increase of carbon emissions and CO2 ppm. Per the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):
- 1850 annual carbon emissions were 54 million metric tons and CO2 ppm was 285.
- 1950 annual carbon emissions were 1,630 million metric tons and CO2 ppm was 311.
- 1970 annual carbon emissions were 4,053 million metric tons and CO2 ppm was 325.
- 1988 annual carbon emissions were 5,965 million metric tons and CO2 ppm was 351.
- 2013 annual carbon emissions were 9,000+ million metric tons and CO2 ppm was 400.
By 2050 at the current trend CO2 ppm will be approximately 600.
Our planet’s CO2 blanket is too heavy causing its fever.

Environmental Activists Gather in Arlington Heights at Climate Rally
A spirited crowd of environmental activists gathered Wednesday evening in Arlington Heights during a People’s Climate Movement rally and march. They called on Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner to curb carbon pollution and grow clean energy jobs in the state.
The evening was punctuated by sing-alongs to Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land,” and the Beatles “All You Need is Love.” Officials said the event recognized a national day of action across the country as the United States prepares for December’s Paris climate talks.
“Usually, the reaction from all levels of governments and the private sector is that we can’t do anything because it costs too much, but the cost of not doing anything will cause even greater harm to our environment, our health and our children’s health,” said Arlington Heights Trustee Robin LaBedz.
A crowd of dozens of local residents cheered her on during a candlelight vigil after a mile-long march down Arlington Heights Road, en route to the village’s North School Park.
One member of the crowd shouted out a call for village officials to reduce garbage pickup from twice to once a week – a proposal the Village Board is expected to discuss in the coming weeks. Otherwise, the event remained upbeat and peaceful, attracting an intergenerational crowd, including families with young children, as well as senior citizens.
Earlier in the evening, the crowd huddled at a pre-march rally at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where Pastor Rhonda Pruit spoke about the importance of faith-based organizations urging members to take action to improve the environment.
“A lot of us coming from faith traditions have some version of the story of us having dominion over the earth, which a lot of people interpret as rights, but it comes with a whole lot of responsibility,” Pruit said. “From a faith perspective, the same God that gave us free reign over the earth gave us the freedom of responsibility to be good stewards.”
The evening was sponsored by several local organizations, including the Sierra Club Northwest Cook County Group, the Climate Reality Project and Arlington Heights Cool Cities. Officials said the event was modeled after a 2014 People’s Climate March in New York City that attracted 400,000 people.
Dan Huntsha, with the Chicago-based Faith in Place, warned that foes of efforts to reduce carbon emissions are not unlike tobacco companies that once hired elite public relations agencies to fight the move against cigarette smoking.
“The good news is, they’re using the exact same playbook, but we know what they’re doing and know how to beat them,” Huntsha said. “And it starts with us making individual choices to do something different.”

Schaumburg, IL –On Monday, September 28, 2015 Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) held its monthly chapter meeting at the Schaumburg Library and the Diversity Outreach and Comprehensive Immigration Reform Teams updated all attendees on the current status of Immigration Reform and presented facts, not broad attacks, about this important American Heritage.
“My family is a family of immigrants. I am an immigrant. My family came to America when I was 7-years old. I grew up with friends who were undocumented. I became an American by doing a lot of the legwork myself and then I sought the sponsorship of Rep. Luis Gutierrez.” This statement was just some of what was shared when NWSOFA combined their monthly chapter meeting with the OFA Greater Chicago Immigration Reform Team and the Illinois Coalition for Immigration and Refugee Rights. The event was anchored with presentations by experts in the areas of diversity and immigration reform. The event was well attended by progressives who came to hear the presentations, but left empowered, engaged, and ready to take action!
The expert presentations were emotional, enlightening, enthusiastic, and quite frankly, excellent! There were tears, gasps, applause, and bows. Notes were being taken, questions composed, photos taken, words captured, tweets sent, and plans made for future actions. A newly appointed Illinois State Senator stopped by, after attending a meeting down the hall, and stated that democracy was in full force in Schaumburg that night. She was right!
Following the expert presentations, the NWSOFA Chapter Co-Leads, Bill Davis and Sara Horan, lead the group through the Snowflake model. Each of the nine NWSOFA Progressive Issue team leads spoke about the updates within their issue team and invited participants at the meeting to join NWSOFA.
As always, getting everyone involved is key to effective community organizing. Each of the event attendees then shared a bit about themselves, why they were there, and what they thought their next step would be in the progressive movement. For so many, their responses were: “How can I choose just one issue team? I want to be on them all!”
It was a night that all organizers seek to have…engagement, enthusiasm, and action!

Schaumburg, IL – On Thursday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m., Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) will hold a “mini” March Chapter meeting and team up with The Coalition to Restore Democracy to present Movie Night “PAY To PLAY” at the Schaumburg Library.
According to an article in the Washington Post dated September 11, 2014, Michael O’Sullivan stated, “Like the recent documentary “Citizen Koch,” “Pay 2 Play” aims to stir up outrage over influence peddling. Although billionaire industrialists David and Charles Koch aren’t mentioned until midway through this film, they and their ilk – wealthy conservatives who push their agendas by pouring cash into the coffers of like- minded politicians – are clearly the villains here.
O’Sullivan also states in the Washington Post article “The answer to Ennis’s question, which he provides himself, is not just to get mad, but to get active. He advocates doing whatever one can to protest the status quo, whether it’s as an individual street artist or blogger or as part of a larger collective such as the Occupy movement. Ennis is an optimist at heart, and his belief that one person can make a difference is infectious, if naïve.”

Jobs Recovery – 2.7 million jobs added in last 12 months; more Americans working than before the recession.
321,000 jobs added in November; September and October employment revised up by 40,000 jobs. Unemployment rate: nationally at 5.8% in November, down 1.3% in the past year and continues to trend down from its high of 10%.
GDP growth: Revised to 5.0 % in the 3rd quarter and 4.6% in 2nd quarter, up from minus 2.1% in 1st quarter. It appears that the negative 1st quarter result was just an anomaly, primarily due to the harsh winter in much of the country.
Budget Deficits – Historical and Projected: 2.8% of GDP in FY 2014, down from a high of 9.8%

Wheeling IL – The message is clear…..The health insurance marketplace is open once again for all Americans looking to get covered. Millions of Americans still need to get health Insurance. Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) hosted a free public forum on Thursday, December 4th at the Indian Trails Library in Wheeling. Get Covered America and Enroll America addressed the Affordable Care Act and the open enrollment session. There was a special guest appearance by Affordable Care Act (ACA) Advocate, Keith Moens, whose interview was featured on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, November 16, 2014. Keith added the heart & soul to the ACA update by telling his family’s story on how ACA restored their peace of mind from not being denied insurance because of pre-existing conditions.
Robin Schmidt, Illinois Field Organizer for Chicago, Northern Cook Co. and Lake Co Get Covered America spoke about the ACA and healthcare statistics. Enroll America’s presentation covered the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of the ACA and Healthcare Insurance through the exchanges. Christine Ross, former ACA lead of NWSOFA, described the fight for the ACA and bringing affordable healthcare to America and Illinois.

What Americans can learn from the Scots

What did Scotland teach us about their recent election — anything? What did this country, founded in 843 CE, an integral part of the United Kingdom for more than 300 years, instruct us about the elements of true patriotism and dedication to the principles of loyalty to one’s own nation?
Certainly it was not the question of independence from or its continued unification with the U.K. Maybe it was the 85 percent voter turnout that convinced the British that, primarily, Scotsmen really care about their future and the welfare of its citizens. Can we conclude that to separate or remain united was secondary?
Undoubtedly, the upcoming election turnout will reveal that the Scots taught this still fledgling democracy nothing as we will again see little more than 40 percent of the American voting-age public cast their ballot in November.
How did we create such disdain and apathy toward our country by its own citizens?

NWSOFA/OFA Celebrating Success of the Affordable Care Act and President Obama’s Birthday
Chicago, IL – On Monday, August 4, 2014 Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) celebrated the success of Healthcare Reform and President Obama’s Birthday at Organizing for Action (OFA) Headquarters downtown Chicago. Well over 100 supporters were in attendance at this great event. Featured guest speakers included Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL 9th District) a fiery defender and advocate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Austan Goolsbee, former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and a member of President Obama’s cabinet. Jon Carson, Executive Director of OFA was also present at the celebration.
Congresswoman Schakowsky was in attendance to meet and thank volunteers for their support of the ACA and let them know they need to take pride in their accomplishments. She stated the passing of ACA was one of the proudest days of her life, and Obama Care is working and on pace to meet numbers that doubters say could not be met. The congresswoman also stated that over 8 million people are covered but 30 million people still need healthcare in this country and we are not going to rest until women have access to family planning.
NWSOFA Chapter Co-Lead Bill Davis stated, “What a great night, inspiring to hear of the success of the ACA and how the President is fighting so hard for the middle class, the poor, and the immigrants. 8 million and growing still rings in my ears as the number of ACA now covered just through the Exchanges continues to grow, plus 3 million on their parents plans till 26, plus the millions added on the expanded Medicaid Insurance program, Awesome. Austan Goolsbee’s speech really highlighted how far the recovery had come adding 9.7 million jobs and 6.2 % unemployment. All after the worst recession anyone can remember when we lost over 8 million jobs and unemployment climbed north of 10%. Good to be reminded of how far we have come since the crash of 2008. Happy Birthday Mr. President & God Bless America!”
Chapter Co-Lead, Sara Salvato stated, “Our NWSOFA team was well represented and had a wonderful time with Rep. Schakowsky, Austan Goolsbee and Jon Carson. One of the highlights was the wall of history where all the 1000’s of volunteers’ names who helped make ACA a success were on display.”

Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) Gun Violence Prevention Team Holds a Day of Action
Schaumburg, IL –Wednesday, July 23, 2014 Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) met to address the 74 shootings in schools all over the United States in the last two years, the inaction of Congress to move forward and to demonstrate that a grassroots organization is able to take on and stand up to the gun lobby and say “Not One More, ” Organizing for Action volunteers in every state worked alongside the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility and other coalition and supportive organizations by hosting phone banks to call Washington voters and ask them to pledge to vote for 1-594 in November. This initiative would expand background checks and go toe-to-toe with a competing initiative (I-591) that would prohibit the expansion of background checks.
Nationally, almost 9,500 phone calls were made to residents of Washington State. Locally, members of the NWSOFA Gun Violence Prevention Issues Team organized a Day of Action, “Conversation, Calling and Connecting for Change,” on Wednesday, July 23rd at the Coffee Planet in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.
The goals of this event were to engage people in Washington State in conversations around the topic of universal background checks, get more people involved in NWSOFA, share effective strategies for creating safer communities for families and businesses and take action in our local communities.
The half-dozen people who attended had a chance to enjoy a tasty lunch together at the Coffee Planet and had time talk about their passion and dedication in helping with gun violence prevention efforts in the northwest suburbs. Over 100 residents of Washington State were called and 50% of those who were called and who talked with members of the NWSOFA phone bank pledged their support for expanded background checks in Washington State.
It was clear to everyone who participated in the July 23d Gun Violence Prevention Day of Action, that citizens all across America share a common vision of the importance of keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people and that expanding background checks on all gun sales helps protect our families and respects our basic rights.

Arlington Heights, IL – On July 17, Tim Pearson, Vice-President of NEXTCHEM Process Analyzers, Inc., gave a stellar Thorium, Molten Salt Reactors, and Green Energy presentation. Both informative and intriguing, the perception of nuclear energy created in our current high pressure uranium nuclear reactors compared to the possibility of nuclear energy created in low pressure thorium nuclear reactors bordered on being a paradigm shift. A few comments from the meeting attendees:
“Seriously, it was a great talk. Thanks also for everyone who came and contributed to the discussion. It is really a blessing to be able to have a thoughtful discussion probing some of the options of these important issues.”
“It was a very effective presentation. It definitely moved the needle on the technical guys, those just wanting to know more, and on those totally against all nuclear energy.”
“My head is still swimming, but feel I got a rudimentary education on this.”
“It was a very informative and thoughtful discussion. I appreciated the expertise in the room.”
“Tim was very informative and the attendees were well informed. Thorium looks promising but I suspect it will take years to develop: So we still need quick implementation of massive numbers of wind and solar facilities to reduce fossil fuel impacts. We also need large investments in battery and material research.”
Some key points from the presentation were:
· Currently there is a tremendous amount of radioactive uranium nuclear waste sitting in holding tanks around the world. Thorium Molten Salt Reactors can use this waste to generate electricity. The waste is enough to replace the electricity generated by coal and natural gas plants throughout the world for 70 years.
· If choose to mine Thorium for electricity generation, then it takes 200 tons of ore to get 1 ton of natural Thorium to generate 1,000 MW of electricity for one year. To get the same amount of electricity from Uranium it takes 800,000 tons of ore to get 250 tons of natural uranium to get 25 tons of enriched uranium.
· For Thorium generated electricity, within 10 years 83% of its spent fission products are stable and can be partitioned and sold, such as for low radiation medical use. The remaining 17% of its fission products go to geologic isolation for 300 years, compared to all of the uranium fission products, which were supposed to go to Yucca Mountain for 10,000 years of isolation, but instead are just sitting around all over the world.
· Thorium is generated in the manufacturing of wind, solar, electric battery, cell phones, television and other electrical components. This radioactive Thorium could be consumed in Molten Salt Reactors allowing more green manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and bringing some home from China.
· India has a working model Thorium reactor, and is planning to build viable Thorium reactors. India has 15% of the world’s coal reserves, as well as 15% of the world’s Thorium. Let’s hope they do. If India burns all that coal releasing the CO2, then our world is toast.
· Molten Salt Reactors can readily be turned off and restarted. The first model at Oak Ridge was shut down for the weekends, because the engineers did not want to work weekends.
· It is most difficult to develop nuclear bombs from Thorium, and detection of Thorium nuclear bomb development is easily detected.
Thorium nuclear energy could also be part of the Illinois energy mix related to the EPA Clean Power Plan proposals released June 2. Each state, including Illinois, will be implementing a carbon system to reduce CO2 emissions 30% by 2030. Each state will individually be assigned flexible criteria to meet its goal. Illinois currently depends on nuclear energy, and good, bad or indifferent, realistically nuclear will be part of the Illinois energy mix. An alternative to uranium nuclear energy is thorium nuclear energy.

GOP is too cool to cap and trade
Farmers in the Plains states have voted overwhelmingly Republican for many years. The Republican Party, reflecting the interests of their major donors such as the coal, oil and gas industries, has assured them that climate change and global warming are leftist fantasies.
Big Tobacco for many years denied the science claiming smoking was bad for our health. Finally we all had to face the truth. We are now at a point where almost no one denies climate change and global warming. The ranks of scientists in denial are rapidly shrinking.
Cap and trade is berated by the Republicans as being too costly of a solution to a problem they don’t want to admit exists because it is anathema to their donors. How many of us recall the great concerns of the states in the eastern United States of the problem of acid rain of a generation ago? Do you remember that we solved the problem by putting in place a cap and trade program for the generators of energy? I saw a recent estimate that program provided a profit of $40 for every $1 that it cost.
At a time like this it is good to remember a couple of old sayings: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and, pay me now or pay me later. The Yale Project on Climate Change Communication points out that the Earth’s temperature is almost certain to rise 2 degrees Celsius in the foreseeable future. That would be like increasing a human’s temperature from a normal 98.6 to 102, a point at which we’d all feel sick. The concern is that the Earth’s temperature can rise 6 C unless we take drastic actions. That would be like raising a human’s temperature to 109.4, at which point we’d all be dead.

Opinion Letter to the Chicago Sun-Times
Since many cities around the country, suddenly discovering that homelessness is either a misdemeanor or a felony, that to jail or imprison them, providing food, shelter, clothing, and security is the answer? Since most are either emotionally or rationally handicapped, can incarceration behind bars, with appropriate medical attention, be just the prescription to treat this urban tourist eyesore?
Realizing that jails are already crowded, should each complicit mayor and their city councils in their deliberation to criminalize their own citizens consider housing in currently vacant, soon-to-be-refurbished buildings, within municipal boundaries, staffed with capable security and medical professionals, at city’s expense?
Arguably, this would be a band-aid approach until thoughtful people around the country ultimately come up with a permanent plan to address this translucent blight on America.

The current national minimum wage is $7.25. On this national day of action, OFA Chapters across the nation continued the petition drive and have collected over half a million in support to let Congress know it’s time to “Raise the Wage.”Those volunteers who collected signatures at the Arlington Hts. Library and Harper College were inspired by the eagerness of people to make their voices heard. Chicago, IL– On Saturday, June 28, OFA-IL volunteers and supporters participated in a nationwide day of action, marking theOne Year Anniversary of the U.S. Senate’s passing of a bipartisan Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill. Supporters renewed calls on the House of Representatives to “Finish the Job”.
The Press Event and Rally was “A Great Success” as the Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) volunteers and other OFA Chapters held the event outside of U.S. Representative, Dan Lipinski’s office calling on Lipinski to ‘TAKE THE LEAD” and “TAKE ACTION.”Bill Davis, NWSOFA Chapter Co-Lead stated, “the cost of not passing Immigration Reform costs the US Treasury 37 Million a Day or 13 Billion a year according to the US CBO… That is the cost of Speaker Boehner and the House of Representatives’ INACTION.”
Marlene Rivera, The OFA-IL and Chicago North Chapter CIR team organizer, stated her biggest tools were people and their willingness to cooperate and as a result, they were able to go above and beyond. Well over 70 volunteers and supporters were in attendance as the NWSOFA, Chicago North and Chicago South Chapter Rally organized by the Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) team had 5 guest speakers.
Event speakers included Maria Perez, a U.S. Citizen with 2 children both U.S. citizens as well; a 4 year old son and 14 year old daughter. Maria stated last year in October 2013, her husband (no criminal record) was detained and 33 days later deported. Maria’s speech focused on the human side of deportation, the senselessness of it and the devastating effect it has had on her family.
Martin Arteaga who is currently running for Alderman in the 23rd Ward spoke about his parent’s personal immigration experience and the contributions made by his family to this country. In addition, he spoke on how immigration is not only a “Hispanic” issue and the economic impact of the immigration population.
CIR team Organizer Marlene Rivera stated, Dan Lipinski should take Congressman Eric Cantor (R-Va.) as an example on how voters can turn on the immigration issue.

Use retired military planes to fight forest fires more effectively
Is there a shortage of fire retardant, enough to blanket a regional forest fire? We should re-commission and refit retired military and commercial aircraft with enough space to accommodate and drop tons of retardant to stop these fires in their tracks.

Palatine IL – On Tuesday, June 17th at 7:00 p.m., Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) held its June monthly chapter meeting at the Palatine Library. Special guest speaker was Organizing for Action (OFA), Midwest Regional Director, Erik Carlson. NWSOFA had a great turnout to hear Erik Carlson present the latest updates on what OFA has accomplished and where the organization is headed. During the presentation, Carlson cheerfully stated that there has been plenty of good news on the success of ACA with over 8 million people now having health insurance just through the state and national exchanges. He spoke on the major impact the new EPA regulations will have to reduce CO2 30% from coal power plants and on alleviating Climate Change. Other issues Carlson spoke on was the success of getting Marriage Equality passed in IL.
Also, Karl Faulstich, the NWSOFA Fiscal Co-Lead reported the real progress that has been made in the job market as over 9.4 million private sector jobs were added since the 2008/2009 great recession, where 8.8 million private sector jobs were lost. He also spoke on the deficit reduction from 1.4 Trillion to 492 Billion CBO projected this year. A 65 percent deficit reduction since 2009 budget year.
Issues team lead Natalie Warren stated, ” I was most impressed with the accomplishments of OFA over the past year. We have made a difference! ” Social Media team lead Kathy Carter felt, “We are relevant, as NWSOFA our actions are consistent with American voters and our voice will be continued to be heard.” Linda Waycie said,” Erik Carlson had some good insights on the issues of OFA. I learned some new information.” Other meeting attendees were pleased to learn more about the structure and goals of OFA.
Other big issues moving forward nationally are Comprehensive Immigration Reform and Gun Violence Prevention. NWSOFA has a big Day of Action on June 28th with a press event/rally at Rep. Lipinski’s Office. Details are available at NWSOFA.org. With the latest horrific school shootings, over 74 since the tragedy at Sandy Hook, Gun Violence Prevention was another big issue. Renee Gladstone enumerated “I am interested in gun violence prevention and was glad to learn OFA will continue to work on this issue.” It was an inspiring evening and as Mark Muehlhausen said, “OFA is an ongoing organization pushing our progressive agenda.”

Make higher education for all a priority
The time has come for the United States to take a bold step forward. We should make a four-year college degree free for all citizens.
A couple of years into the Iraq War the statement was made that we were spending a half-trillion dollars per year on that war and that, for that price, we could’ve given a free college education to all our students. It’s estimated that the total cost of college in 2002 was $289 billion.
Where are our values? Can we afford it? I say yes we can by asking the rich to revert to paying the same percent in taxes they did under Jimmy Carter. By closing loopholes for the rich, superrich and giant corporations, we could not only have free college, we could pay off all outstanding student loans ($1 trillion) and still have money left over to reduce the budget deficit.
What kind of loopholes am I talking about? First, the main sources of income of those with inherited wealth are dividends and capital gains. In 1978 their rates were cut in half. Also, at that time the top marginal tax rate was 70 percent (reduced from 90 percent under Kennedy). Reagan cut the top rate to 28 percent. The national debt exploded and, by my estimate, at least $10 trillion of our national debt at the end of fiscal 2010 could be attributed to these changes alone.
Meanwhile, corporations have drastically reduced their taxes through the use of offshore tax havens.
In the Thomas Piketty book, “Capital in the 21st Century,” he points out how inequality is compounded from inherited wealth. We should eliminate the “step up in basis” that allows investments for which tax has never been paid to pass to heirs tax-free.

The Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence knows that all parents want their kids to be safe when they have a play date with a friend. And they know that being a parent should not include worrying about whether or not your child will be injured or killed when your child plays in the home of a friend. To help reduce this worry, all parents are encouraged to ask: “Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?”
It is a simple question and an important one and part of National ASK Day, Saturday June 21st . According to the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, we know that 1 out of 3 homes with kids have guns and nearly 1.7 million children live in a home with an unlocked, loaded question. So the next time your child goes over to a friend’s house, just ask the one crucial safety question that could save your child’s life.
