Attached are the presentations from our March meeting.

Instead of our normal fiscal meeting on April 17th, we are inviting everyone to join us to learn more about the federal budget and participate in a free workshop put on by the Concord Coalition. This is sponsored by Representative Brad Schneider.

It will be on April 17th from 6-8 pm at

Lake Forest College

555 North Sheridan Road

Lake Forest, IL 60045

“The public is encouraged to participate in this free event. Participants will engage in a realistic discussion about the federal budget and how several recent policy proposals could impact our nation’s economy, debt and deficit.

Questions participants will consider during the workshop include:

· What is the current composition of the federal budget? How are taxes spent and who pays them?

· What options are being considered to change the federal budget, strengthen the economy and improve our quality of life?

· What kind of political will and compromise will be required of our political leaders to change or even to maintain current federal budget priorities?

We will continue our own discussions after the event, but the venue has not yet been determined. We might be able to use space at the college. Alternatively, does anyone know of a bar/restaurant/coffee shop close to the college that might work for a group discussion?

Below are some helpful links from David Doney related to discussions at our March fiscal meeting, which focused on the Economic Legacy of the Obama Presidency, with additional discussion on the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and Republican efforts to repeal and replace.

Karl: Some additional links related to some of the Q&A that came up; I think the article you sent me on Marco Rubio should be included in the distribution to the group too.

The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission’s results on the causes of the financial crisis. Nine of the 10 Commissioners (6 Dems and 3 of 4 Republicans) argued that government housing policy was NOT a primary cause of the crisis. Housing bubbles were in many countries, the investment banks at the core of the crisis were not subject to the Community Reinvestment Act and do not originate mortgages, the credit bubble was wider in scope than just housing, etc. Only 1 of the 10 Commissioners argued that housing policy was central to the crisis.
