NWSOFA Inivisible Partner Event: National Safe Gun Storage Forum

May 20, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

We invite you to register HERE to join the National Safe Gun Storage Forum on May 20th from 7:00-8:00PM EST with Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, Mike and Kristin Song and Fred Guttenberg.

On January 31, 2018, 15 year-old Ethan Song from Guilford, Connecticut was killed by a .347 magnum handgun that was stored in a cardboard box at his friend’s house in his neighborhood. After their tragic loss, Ethan’s parents Kristin and Mike Song championed the passage of Connecticut’s Ethan’s Law to require gun owners to safely secure their firearms in their homes. We are now working with Kristin, Mike, Fred, Senator Blumenthal and Congresswoman DeLauro to pass the federal version of Ethan’s Law, H.R.2867 and S.193 to set the federal standards for safe firearm storage to protect our children and loved ones.

Every day, eight children and teens in the U.S. are unintentionally injured or killed with an improperly stored gun. According to data analyzed by Everytown for Gun Safety, unintentional shootings by children increased 43 percent in March and April of this year compared to average gun deaths during the same two months over the last three years. Not surprisingly, the spike in unintentional shootings coincided with the surge in gun sales during the coronavirus lockdowns. The FBI conducted nearly 3 million background checks for firearm sales, transfers and permitting last month and record-breaking 3.7 million in March.

Amid the coronavirus gun surge, it’s more important than ever for us to discuss and take immediate action on safe gun storage to protect our children. Please sign our petition HERE to encourage Congress to pass Ethan’s Law and we hope to see you virtually on May 20th.
