NWSOFA Partner Event: Action Ridge meets to talk Equal Rights Amendment
January 8, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Action Ridge, a Park Ridge-based group dedicated to social causes, will meet Monday to discuss the Equal Rights Amendment and how to support ratification in Illinois, the group announced.
The meeting, which is open to the community, will take place at 7 p.m. at Park Ridge Community Church, 100 Courtland Ave. in Park Ridge.
An aide to State Rep. Lou Lang, a sponsor of the Equal Rights Amendment in the Illinois House for many years, will be attendance at the meeting to discuss the amendment and answer questions, Action Ridge said.
Nan Parson, co-founder of Action Ridge, said there is a plan for attendees to fill out postcards in support of the ERA, to be mailed to state officials.
“This is a follow-up to ‘Equal Means Equal,’ the documentary that we showed in November, so people can try to better understand the importance of having the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution,” Parson said.
The Equal Rights Amendment, which provides equal legal rights to women, was passed by Congress in 1972, but failed to receive the required support from 38 of the 50 states. Illinois was one of the states that did not ratify the ERA.
With Nevada having ratified the amendment in 2017, only two more states are needed for ratification in order for the ERA to be added to the Constitution, Parson said.
