Women are currently the main breadwinner in a record-high 40 percent of households, but on everything from paid leave to fair pay, our workplace policies too often don’t reflect today’s realities.
Join our house party hosted by NWSOFA supporters and be part of a conversation about the issues that affect women and working families, and how we can fight to change that. After the discussion, we’ll decide what action we can take by continuing our Raise the Minimum Wage Petition gathering.
Now our national focus is on economic issues including equal pay, raising the minimum wage, family leave, affordable child care. Bring your concerns and creativity and your friends for what is always an inspiring evening.

NWSOFA Climate Change
Presents an Educational Event
Thursday
June 17th, 2014
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights
1903 East Euclid Avenue
This July 17 educational event, to be presented by Tim Pearson, Vice-President of NEXTCHEM Process Analyzers, Inc., will include a detailed explanation of why Molten Salt Reactors are superior to our present Light Water Reactors, and how they can be designed to use Thorium nuclear waste generated by U.S. wind/solar/ electric car manufacturing, keeping Green Manufacturing jobs in the U.S instead of remaining in China. These Molten Salt Reactors could also be designed to use High Level Nuclear Waste.
Thorium nuclear energy could also be part of the Illinois energy mix related to the EPA Carbon Pollution Standards released June 2. Each state, including Illinois, will be implementing a carbon system to reduce CO2 emissions 30% by 2030. Each state will individually be assigned flexible criteria to meet its goal. Illinois currently depends on nuclear energy, and good, bad or indifferent realistically it will be part of the Illinois energy mix. An alternative to uranium nuclear energy thorium nuclear energy has a half-life of 300 years. It also cannot be converted for atomic bomb purposes, and in the case of a tsunami it would cake up. Long term Thorium could possibly become an important part of our zero carbon future.
Come to this event with an open mind and lots of questions, and be prepared to at least entertain the thought of Thorium as a source of electricity.

Immigration Reform
“Documented”
A Film Screening
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014
6:30 – 9:00 PM
Arlington Heights Library
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas began working on “Documented” shortly before “outing” himself as undocumented in a groundbreaking New York Times Magazine essay, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.”
Vargas has traveled around the United States, telling his story in solidarity with the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country. As he connected with others — particularly those who, like Vargas, came to the United States as children — his personal reflections compelled him to reconnect with his mother, whom he had not seen in 20 years.
Come join us to get folks involved in the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Movement.

Gun Violence Prevention
Wednesday, July 23nd, 2014
6:30 – 9:00 PM
Two events to keep track of:
1) Just a few days after my son, Christopher, was shot and killed, I asked concerned Americans like you to send a postcard to your elected officials with the simple, powerful message of “Not One More.”
Since then, more than 600,000 supporters have signed postcards to their senators, representatives, and governors declaring “Not One More.”
That means we have nearly 2.5 million postcards to deliver in the next couple weeks — so we’re going to need a hand from a few dedicated volunteers like you.
Can you join Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action in West Chicago to deliver “Not One More” postcards?
“Not One More” in West Chicago, IL at the Office of Representative Peter Roskam
When: Wednesday, July 2, 11:00 AM
Where: 2700 International Drive, Suite 304, West Chicago, IL
