NO APRIL FOOLING
April is the time of year we think about rebirth. Our part of Mother Earth is tilting toward the sun which brings us longer, warmer days leading into Spring.
April is full of spring flowers, greening grass, budding trees and Climate Change Coalition events.
Join us for
LWV Harper Environmental Day-4/7,
March for Science-4/14,
Sierra Earth Day at Deer Grove-4/14,
Sustainability Energy Expo with Tom Skilling-4/21,
Environmental Lobby Day- Springfield 4/26.
Come to one or all. Also please complete our quick survey to see who can help with building more sustainable villages. (More on that later)
And when you have an extra minute other things you can do:
stop using plastic straws: tell your server you don’t want one (there are millions thrown away daily and they aren’t recyclable)
find out if your village or township recycles batteries
Thank businesses for taking steps to reduce their greenhouse gases
ask your recycling company what to do with the styrofoam they don’t take
get a home energy audit to find out how you can use less energy for more comfort
think about buying clothes that don’t have plastic in them
learn 1 talking point about how climate change affects us right here, and use it in conversation.
Oh! and don’t forget our regular and special activities that are scheduled for APRIL!
Over 1,500 students, local area residents and politicians turned out in Schaumburg to demand “Common Sense” Gun Control Saturday morning … It’s now a Movement!

Are You Ready to Take Action in Your Town or Village?
(If so Contact us Immediately or by April 16, whichever comes first!)
2018 will be a year of action for several of our NWSOFA (Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action) teams, particularly Climate Change and Gun Violence Prevention.
NWSOFA has developed a template for local residents to plan and execute campaigns that can move city councils
and village boards into adopting components of a progressive agenda.
Ready to commit to joining a team in your town?
Want to first learn more about our new capabilities?
Describe your interest to take local action in the Survey link below .. won’t take more than a minute or two .. not a high price for our children and grandchildren’s future!
The survivors of the Parkland, FL school shooting who organized the March for Our Lives on March 24 have called for town halls on gun violence prevention in every House district across the country on April 7, which is during the Congressional recess.
High School students in IL06, many of whom organized walkouts from their schools on March 14, are planning a town hall and inviting Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) and his Democratic challenger, Sean Casten.
The event is open to the public and the 600-seat venue will be filled on a first-come basis. Doors open at 12:30 PM.
With extreme weather events, flooding, drought, and habitat fragmentation on the rise, will our trees be able to weather the storm? What will our parks, preserves, and urban landscapes look like in 50 or 100 years? Grab a drink at the bar (one drink is included in price of ticket), and join us for a compelling discussion led by moderator Jerome McDonnell of WBEZ Radio’s Worldview.
Our Annual Earth Day Celebration is planned for Saturday April 14 at Deer Grove Forest Preserve. More details will be coming soon. The Airplane Grove is Grove 3 (max. 300 people). Enter Deer Grove West off W Dundee Rd to the north. Take the first right and the grove will be on the north side, opposite the bathroom building.

Because of Newtown, and now because of Parkland, the NWSOFA GVP Issues group for the past 5 years has committed itself to become an even bolder advocate of change and action. We are determined to change the conversation surrounding gun violence in America, change the hearts of people we encounter through a spirit of volunteerism and kindness – and take action to change the laws to create safer communities for every family in America.
The GVP Issue team educates by having periodic informational meetings, collaborates with coalition non-partisan groups, such as local faith communities and Moms Demand Action and takes action by supporting the efforts of our youth and March for Our Lives and recruiting legislators to build support for legislation to license gun dealers in Illinois, strengthen background checks and by raising community awareness through hosting vigils, using social media, writing letters to the editor and handing out fliers.
If you are interested in joining us and honoring all victims of gun violence through your individual actions, then we invite you to come to our monthly Gun Violence Prevention Issues Group Planning Meeting at the Northwest Suburban Democrats office in Arlington Hts, IL., 60004.
We hold a 90 minute meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month (with some exceptions near holidays or if we are planning a public event that month). Please join us – together we can make a difference in creating safer communities for all Americans, including our law enforcement officers. Registration is preferred since seating is sometimes limited.
“Hope is not blind optimism. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, and to work for it, and to fight for it.” President Barack Obama
