OFA Announces Two (2) New Initiatives for 2015
Last night at a ACA meeting that was sponsored by NWSOFA and presented by Enroll America, I had the opportunity to listen to our NWSOFA recap of our issues.  While I was feeling somewhat down about the recent elections, Sara was reminding the attendees that over the past several years we had contributed in no small measure to the efforts to pass the ACA, Pass Marriage Equality in Illinois, See Tremendous Action on the Climate and Immigration through the Presidents Executive Order and Witness one of the largest comebacks in history as the Healthcare Exchanges failed to perform and then a month later we all started to see the huge record numbers of folks signing up for the ACA and the Expanded Medicaid Enrollment.
WE sometimes FORGET how Powerful a Force we are… and that CREATING social change is a PROCESS not a Destination….
For 2015 OFA has announced two (2) new initiatives on 1) Outreaches to the youth at the college and university level and 2) Outreach to the minorities in our areas, while continuing to work harder to win the hearts and minds of those that voted for: Marriage Equality, ACA Healthcare reform, Climate Change, Minimum Wage, Gun Violence Prevention, Equal Pay for Equal Work for Women, and Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
Join us in 2015 and we continue to create social change…

On December 14, 2012 the horrible gun massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School occurred.
In the two years since then, thousands more Americans have been shot in our country and hundreds more in our city.
We will gather to honor all their memories and show that as a nation we do not accept this and we demand change to reduce gun violence in our society.
This event is sponsored by Chicago’s Citizens for Change, Purpose Over Pain and the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence in conjunction with Newtown Action Alliance.

Please Attend the Monthly Fiscal and Economic Issues Discussion Group Meeting

We will have our standard update of the economy, both jobs and GDP. We will also continue our discussions of the economic recovery and policy issues that affect the recovery.

Some economic highlights:

  • Jobs Recovery 321,000 jobs added in November;
  • 2.7 million in last 12 months September and October employment revised up by 40,000 jobs
  • Unemployment rate: nationally at 5.8% in October, down 1.3% in the past year and continues to trend down from its high 11%.
  • GDP growth: 3.8% Revised in the 3rd quarter and 4.6% in 2nd quarter, up from minus 2.1% in 1st quarter. It appears that the negative 1st quarter result was just an anomaly, primarily due to the harsh winter in much of the country.
  • Budget Deficits – Historical and Projected

As always this is a discussion group .. bring your articles and your wits to talk about all sides of the issues.

Other Area Events
National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend
On Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 pm,
The Countryside Church United Universalist will be showing the video “Trigger: the Ripple Effect of Gun Violence”, followed by a discussion on the means by which gun violence might be reduced. The church, at 1025 N. Smith Street in Palatine, is a short distance north of Northwest Highway.

The screening is part of National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend, Dec. 11-14, sponsored by Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, along with the Newtown Foundation. Time will be set aside to remember the 30,000+ lives lost each year and to pray for hope, courage, and determination to make changes in honor of their memory.
Vigils, held at the nation’s capital as well as hundreds of congregations or community groups across the nation, will also commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the Sandy Hook school tragedy.  Some gatherings will reflect on what can be done to reduce injury and loss of life from gunfire that so frequently plagues our towns and cities.
The Countryside Church event is free. All who are wanting to reduce firearm violence and wish to participate in a respectful discussion are welcome. If you have questions, please call (847) 359-8440 or email socialaction@ccuu.org

It’s time to Act .. It Is Time To Get Involved
Over the years the American Citizens have lost their voices, believing that we can not make a difference.  We have been beat down by the constant droning noise of the conservative right. This onslaught has made us like sheep .. afraid to express our views.  Not anymore!  OFA gives us back our voices and by working together we are making change one issue at a time. Together we can and will make a difference.
