“Indivisible Rural Illinois Presents: Danville City Council Wants to Ban Abortion in the City Limits.
Is Your Community Next?”
The 6-person panel will be giving updates on the situation, as well as letting us know what those of us who do not live in Danville can do to help. Register for the Zoom link below:
Illinois is a state that has been working to make women’s healthcare, including abortion care, as accessible as possible. This is even more crucial because of the states that border Illinois. The legislatures in Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Kentucky are working at restricting abortion access. Danville, Illinois is just west of the Indiana border. A medical group from Indiana wants to open a women’s health clinic in Danville. (Abortion is currently legal in Indiana. But that is only because temporarily, a judge blocked a total abortion ban bill, that was passed in their legislature, from being enacted. It has yet to go through appeals.) The Danville City Council just passed an ordinance that would not only make it illegal to perform surgical abortions in the city limits, but would ban abortion medications from coming into the city, even through the mail. The ACLU is fighting this. If the Danville City Council ordinance is allowed to stand, this could be the first domino to fall. In a state like Illinois, where state law legalizes abortion, municipalities as a whole would be allowed to block access. Join Indivisible Rural Illinois to listen to our panel from the statewide groups of ACLU-Illinois and Personal PAC, an elected official for Danville, as well as Danville Community Organizers, to find out what is happening on the ground in the first battle of this type, in what could be a full-blown war.
