For the Month of April, NWSOFA set new standards with two official Chapter Meetings, one @ the Arlington Heights Library early in the month as we celebrated the ACA’s teams success with over 7 million signups on the Healthcare Exchanges and latter in the month @ the Schaumburg Library with a great presentation on “Money, Politics and Democracy” by Jack Altschuler. With a total of 19 events during April there was always something happening, someplace to be and something to learn!
We are proud to say we are growing our membership with the tremendous commitment of our great Issue Leads and superb volunteers (see photos below).
NWSOFA’s May will be full of continuing activities headlined with: Climate Change, Gun Violence Prevention, Standing with Women, Fiscal & Economic Issues and Comprehensive Immigration Reform. We are excited as we move forward into the summer months.
Now that the initial goals of ACA have been meet, we are turning our focus to our fight for Immigration Reform and continue efforts on Raising the Minimum Wage and Climate Change as the key Social Issues Agenda. We will be active on all fronts: meetings, rally’s, email and Social Media Campaign .. all designed to create awareness with a more focused and amplified voice.
As our 4/22 Speaker, Jack Altschuler, reminded us; “we can not accomplish change from the comfort of our couch’s, easy chairs or homes.. that WE must take “ACTION” and make our voices be heard”, and that is exactly what we are doing!
Join us this month at one or more of our many chapter events and/or Issue meetings / events and add your voice and action. We invite you to especially stop in and watch the screening of “Years of Living Dangerously” as part of our May Monthly Meeting (May 5th, 6:30- 9:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, 1903 E. Euclid)!
Looking forward to seeing you, Sara & Bill

Join the Immigration Reform CIR Dream Team as we expand our efforts in the North West Suburbs. Organization, goals, and action plans will be discussed from 6:30- 7:30 pm .
The team will make select calls to others in the Northwest Suburbs with the purpose of expanding the team. Our calls will be placed to the Northwest Suburbs to create action on the goals and action plans developed at the CIR National Day Of Action in February.
It’s Working…. We are changing the way Illinois politicians are looking at Immigration through our ACTIONS:
4-22-14: Former and current Illinois Republican politicians advocated for comprehensive immigration reform Tuesday in an apparent departure from national House Republicans’ strategy of piecemeal reform.
4-22-14 Two House Republicans from Illinois are endorsing some sort of legal status for immigrants in the country illegally, adding renewed GOP support for immigration reform efforts that have come to a standstill on Capitol Hill. (these are House Republicans we have targeted)
Come join us to get folks involved in the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Movement.
Join us every first and third Thursday from 7-9pm at the Coffee Planet. Meet the team, have some coffee and makes some calls.
We discuss the political news of the day and how it impacts our Issues and events coming up and make calls to invite others to come. Don’t like making calls, come and write letters to the editor-LTE, or help make posters if there’s a rally coming up.
Please call Sara 847-372-5594 to confirm so we know how many lists to bring.

MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA
Join us at the Streets of Woodfield Starbucks on Thursday, May 8th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm for some great coffee, conversation and cookies as we help Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America celebrate the love and hard work of all moms during a week of action before Mother’s Day.
Learn how you can help us to harness the energy and strength of moms and encourage more conversations around the topic of gun safety in every town in the Northwest Suburbs. And learn how you can help us recruit as many Gun Sense Voters as we can in an effort to expand the number of voters who will vote only for candidates who support common sense gun laws. We need your ideas and passion to help grow this movement! Hope to see you there!
If you are interested in great coffee and lively conversation and want to learn how you can take action now – to honor all victims of gun violence and make our communities safer – then come to our monthly Gun Violence Prevention Planning Meeting at the Streets of Woodfield, Starbucks.
We hold a short (30 – 45 minutes) Planning Meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month and afterwards many of us stay to help out with the weekly NWSOFA Phone Banking.
Our May meeting will be held on Thursday, May 15th at 6:30 pm. Come and join us in building safe communities here in the northwest suburbs and all across America!
You re invited to our Stand with Women monthly meeting.
We will be exploring ways we can highlight issues that are unique to women but impact everyone. We have been very pleased with the crucial benefits ACA has guaranteed women such as non-discriminatory rates for insurance, free preventive care and reproductive health care, no more exclusion from pre-existing conditions and much more.
Now our national focus is on economic issues including equal pay, raising the minimum wage, family leave, affordable child care. Bring your concerns and creativity and your friends for what is always an inspiring evening.

We Were Very Busy, Busy, Busy in April
It’s time to Act .. It Is Time To Get Involved
Over the years the American Citizens have lost their voices, believing that we can not make a difference. We have been beat down by the constant droning noise of the conservative right. This onslaught has made us like sheep .. afraid to express our views. Not anymore! OFA gives us back our voices and by working together we are making change one issue at a time. Together we can and will make a difference.
Thank You to our NWSOFA Issue Leads in 2013 !!
