NWSOFA-Indivisible wanta to take a moment and acknowledge today is NINE ELEVEN.

Today is September 11th, a day of remembrance for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. There are several events being held across the United States to commemorate this day. For example, in New York City, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum is hosting an annual commemoration ceremony to observe the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

In Minnesota, a new memorial will be unveiled to honor all the lives lost on 9/11, including Wayzata native Gordy Aamoth Jr., and include several pieces of the World Trade Center. In California, there are several memorials that include WTC steel. In South Florida, there are several memorial events being held across Broward and Miami-Dade County, and in Tampa Bay area, there is a 9/11 Day of Remembrance Ceremony being held at Patriot Park in Madeira Beach.

Stand With Women Zoom September 14th Meeting – at 7pm – SWW Talks with Aurie Pennick a retired Civil Rights Lawyer on Civil Rights – Please join us to welcome our guest speaker – a very familiar face to our NWSOFA family- AURIE PENNICK -Attorney and Chicago Community Leader

Aurie has been a Civil Rights Attorney, Fair Housing Co-ordinator, Grant Writer for numerous non-profits and departments for Chicago and State Governments.

Aurie’s list of achievements goes on and on and so does her energy and compassion! Even after 60 years of The Civil Rights Act becoming the law of the land, Aurie has more concern than

ever for the lives, the future and the civil rights of our Black Community in present day America. Our evening with Aurie Pennick will be insightful and passionate on this topic and more.

So bring your questions and concerns. I have attached Aurie’s Biographical Profile. Take a few minutes to read it. Attorney Aurie Pennick is an amazing woman who has been in the fight for fairness, equality and justice for so many in Chicago for so many years.

It couldn’t have been easy. Michelle and I look forward to hearing her story.

As you know Illinois is welcoming women in need of abortions from many neighboring states. The abortion numbers are up 68% in Illinois. At the September meeting we will touch on how Illinois is managing. Over the next couple months, with your help and insights, Michelle and I plan to delve more thoroughly into the Illinois Abortion Access issue and what we can do to help ease the burden for women coming from out of state to seek needed abortions. Also, at our meeting, we will share upcoming NWSOFA and GPAD and Cook County United Against Hate events ( event listings and links will be forwarded in following emails).

Join State Rep Mark Walker for Discussion on IL Fiscal Issues

The NWSOFA Fiscal and Economic Issues group will meet on Monday, September 18th at 7 pm. The Zoom room will open by 6:50 pm. Come join us, catch up on this year’s economic news and share your thoughts.

Good news in recent economic data – it looks like we are heading for a soft landing:

– the debt ceiling increased until 2025

– nonfarm payrolls increased by 187,000 in August

– the unemployment rate was 3.8% in August, but it increased because more people entered the labor force

– The twelve month CPI has declined from 9.1% last June (2022) to 3.3% in July 2023. Twelve month PCE inflation was at 3.3% in July 2023

– First quarter Real GDP growth was revised up to 2.0%. Initial estimate of second quarter real GDP was revised down to 2.1%

David and Karl will be updating the fiscal and economic data. Come discuss the current state of the US economy.

In addition, IL State Representative Mark Walker will speak about what is happening in Illinois.

Bottom line is that the data through August show a slowly growing economy that is still strong.

On Monday, September 18th, David and Karl will try to explain what this all means.
